ABOUT
Maai Mahiu Primary School
Started in 1956, it was located at Mt. Margret and was called Mt. Margret Primary School. It had 42 students. In 1972 the school was relocated to Muniu Area, Kijabe Sub Location where it’s located today, 106 students were registered then.
The School has grown since, by 2004 it had 404 pupils. After the election clashes by September of 2008 the school had grown because of IDP pupils, so currently we have 920 pupils! We are an average school scoring 229.83 out of 500, we also received a trophy this year for the 3rd best improved school in this district. There are 117 Primary Schools in our district.
Due to the pupil in flax after IDP Camps settled in this area, we are experiencing some major challenges. Currently we have 16 classrooms, but we need 20. The fence needs to be build to protect the pupils. The feeding program is semi-supported by the government, but we need to hire and pay a cook and buy more utensils and plates. Government supplies 12 exercise books-every students needs 20, 2 pencils, but the children need 5 per year. The parents are supposed to cater for the rest, but they are not able to do that. If we use the 1 teacher per 40 pupils recommended formula we need 24, but we only have 13 teachers. The primary school education is free in Kenya, but we face many challenges where parents come in and help. That is why we have to charge a fee. ( part of the parent-teacher association) That fee helps pay for teachers. We would greatly appreciate any donations and volunteers.
We pay KHS 5000 ( $60) per teacher per month.
KSH 6000 ($70) for the Cook, he is paid more because he is overworked, he does the work of THREE cooks , cooking a meal for 300 pupils at meal time.
Government provides maize, some cooking fat and beans, the school has to come up for everything else ( cook fees, utensils, cooking pots, firewood, food other than maize and beans)
As much as we appreciate our Governments effort there is still much to be done and that is why we plead to well wishers, donors and volunteers to help our school anywhere they can. I am sure our scores would even go higher up.

Internally Displaced bright pupils who need assistance to continue with education.
The six pupils below are chosen out of 920; they are very bright students and we wish to see them become career oriented adults. As a head master I strongly believe and am confident that with your financial assistance those 6 students will do just that. They all score 300 and above, we strongly recommend they continue their education at our neighboring Maai Mahiu Secondary School -as borders which will allow them to fully concentrate on their academic goals, having food, electricity and councilors at hand.
